Most of us know meditation as only sitting in a same posture for long. No, this is not meditation. It is something which just align all your chakras present in your body and then makes your mind and body relax. Let us understand what is mediation and how it came into existence.

Introduction

The term meditation comes from the Latin word meditatum meaning “to ponder”. It is believed to be originated in India thousand years ago. According to archaeological findings it was evident that hunters-gatherers practiced some form of meditation, and the knowledge was passed on to other generation orally.

At around 5000 to 3500 BC, in Indian Subcontinent it was evident through wall art that people practice meditation, where people were found to be seated in a mediation pose and meditating.

During the time of Vedas at round 1500 BC, the knowledge of meditation was passed on to future generation orally where Vedas were memorized and the knowledge was transferred.

According to Hindu tradition it was believed that Yogis and Sages both meditate and it is believed to be the oldest meditation technique that is followed.

Buddhism Era

This was the era where Buddhism spread all over and gained popularity for teaching meditation. It was that era where Siddhartha Gautama abandoned his lavish life and went out to attain enlightenment and there he learned about the teachings, techniques and the philosophy associated with it.

Jainism Era

The era where Mahavir gained popularity for teaching the techniques of meditation. Along with Mahavir there were other religion also who gained popularity for teaching meditation they are Taoism founded by Lao Tze in China and Confucianism founded by Confucius in China.

All of the mentioned religion follows different aspect of meditation like

  • Jainism focuses on non-violence, purification, self-discipline.
  • Taoism focuses mainly on energies that is cosmic life and nature.
  • Confucianism focuses on morality and community life.

Greek Era

This was the era where a new version of meditation was introduced under the influence of Yogis and Sages. In this era navel gazing was more prominent later on meditation technique of involving concentration was also introduced.

Sufism

Sufi whirling still a very common trend in Turkey which is a form of meditation/practice to connect with God/Allah. This is followed 1400 years back, where breathing, mantra and gazing were the major center of attraction.

Modern Western World

The main Yoga and Meditation were introduced in modern world by Swami Vivekananda. His teachings, beliefs inspired the eastern community very much. Then Paramahansa Yogananda also took Yoga and Meditation to the east and there he shared his knowledge.

Modern Meditation

In the early 21st century, Meditation is gaining popularity just like Yoga, where people are getting the benefits of mind, body and soul. But it should be noted here that if you have just started to do the meditation it is always advised to start with guided meditation.
