Corporate Yoga: A Path to Wellness

With the rising tension of poor work-life balance, stress, competition, desk jobs, and no time to focus on health, life is very challenging these days. People are not getting enough time to sleep or to exercise, so as modern days are revolutionizing, it is high time that we start prioritizing our health. People are busy with their day-to-day meetings, deadlines, and obviously pressure. So now organizations have started employee wellness programs so that their employees seek a healthy lifestyle. Yoga, being an emerging topic, is now being incorporated into corporate yoga sessions for employees, ensuring they are healthy from the inside and outside. The major advantage of yoga at the workplace is that it does not require fancy equipment or space; a well-ventilated room or an open area is ideal.

Yoga is a Sanskrit word for “Union” and is a universal concept with its ultimate goal being to quiet one’s mind, body, and soul. There is one definition given by “Maharishi Patanjali” that if you can control the fluctuations of thoughts and emotions in your mind, you can reach the state of “self-realization”. Yoga is now gaining popularity in today’s modern society because of its various health benefits, but during ancient times, yoga has always been in trend because of its physical and mental well-being. During ancient times, people considered yoga as a “sadhana”.

How Corporate Yoga Differs from Traditional Yoga

Corporate Yoga is different from traditional Yoga because here you will be bound to certain rules and regulations/policies of the organization. Extra precautions are necessary because the employees are your indirect clients. There are chances that some of them will not like physical touch, so before demonstrating or modifying the postures, always ask them whether they are comfortable or not.

Asanas to Practice at the Workplace

Seated Forward Fold

Sit on the chair with legs wide apart. Inhale and while exhaling, bend down, placing the chest on the legs. Hold the posture for a few breaths and then return back. Repeat 2-3 times.

Chair Pigeon Pose

Sit on the chair, place one leg on the opposite knee, now bend from hips and remain in the posture for a few breaths and then repeat it on the other side.

Standing Forward Fold

Stand with your legs open wide apart. Inhale and while exhaling, bend forward and then remain in the posture for a few breaths. Repeat the process 2-3 times.

Desk Shoulder Opener

Stand in front of the desk, place your hands on the edge of the desk, inhale and while exhaling, walk your feet back to make an ‘L’ shape. Hold the posture and repeat it 2-3 times.

Deep Breathing

The easiest and most effective way to reduce stress is to start deep breathing so that all the toxins and negative energy get removed from your body, making you feel energetic again.

Pranayama

You can practice any form of Pranayama to relax your mind and body. Sit on a chair and search for a place with low disturbance, then concentrate and focus on pranayama.

Conclusion

With increasing tension in our day-to-day life, it is very important to incorporate some form of physical activity. Yoga at the workplace can be a very effective way to reduce stress and anxiety, and it is an effective way of bonding with the team.
